Semi Abstract Martian
I don't even know where to begin with this painting. It was painted about 3 years into my art gallery on the back wall of my studio. I had designed a drywall easel which really was just the drywall on the wall with a shelf underneath it.
I had gotten into the habit of stretching three same sized Blake canvases right next to each other above that shelf. I produced probably 60 paintings this way, all very similar in size. I remember that when this one came out it was pretty quick and during a style transition of mine.
Those who remember would come into the back of the gallery and that’s where I would be working, generally on one of the three canvases I had going above that easel. There were countless conversations with countless people back at that studio. A very unassuming location for significant spiritual changes for many of us that were in Gastonia, NC at the time.
The back of that gallery was quite a significant force of movement, ideas, sorrow, joy, and pain even during the years this painting was created. As usual, there was no intent, no reason for this painting to come into being other than to occupy what space and time it has, period. When it was done the painting reminded me of an old cartoon character called Marvin the Martian from the Looney Tunes.
If you Google it, you might see the similarities, but every time I see this painting that's what I see. The object in the foreground reminds me of a dead bird and the object to the right reminds me of an old paperweight. This style is similar to what I'm reaching for in 2023, a very raw and yet refined image. This painting might be worth revisiting, and I offer that option to the buyer. I will do another version of this free of charge to the new owner. The two would look interesting side by side 10+ years apart.
