Semi Abstract Obelisk

I have been painting Obelisks for decades, they are a common appearance in my work.  Honestly, I do not know exactly where they came from, I have just always painted them. Maybe because they are just easy geometric, architectural, recognizable, symbolic things that I am good at painting.  Architecture was my first love, and it appears in several capacities within my body of work.

I have a certain affinity for old ruins, old fallen architecture on the roadside, in pictures, movies, etc. Whenever I see an old ruin, whether from ancient Roman times or just this century, there is a certain sense of wonder, intrigue for me, makes me curious, and I always thought that’s where they came from.  They where always markers of man’s presence, guideposts that said “I (man) was here”.

After my marriage ended, I began, became obsessed even, in trying to create a 2d visualization of the presence of Man and God together, then Man, Woman, and God.  What would their relationship look like as a non-objective, semi abstract, conceptualized image? The obelisk represents man, the boxy shape at the top, next to or within the work always represents a woman, at least on a conscious level.

I do not know what the images will change to when I meet someone I can love, someone that loves me equally back. I imagine there will be lots of joy represented, much yellow. The title simply refers back to Bree and meeting her. Now, having the knowledge that my heart’s desire is possible, getting a glimpse of it, and knowing it will happen again on a greater scale, the title telegraphs Hope.

If I had an opportunity to do it all over again, I would do everything the same except I would name every painting I have ever did “An Ode to Kristin Bills, Pt. 1” and Pt.2, Pt. 3 and so on and so forth.  Love is a powerful force, nothing like it in all existence.  God is Love.
